Chronicle of Greed: The Legacy of Fifty Shades of Grey →

publishingfanfiction:

So far there are over 50 (confirmed) Twilight Fan Fiction stories that have been “published” as original novels. Please see the book covers below. E.L. James didn’t start this trend, but her success has and the lack of legal repercussions have proved that you can get away with it.

This is just…

Take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.

Fifty Shades & The “Philadelphia Incident”

I’m not really sure if this is the best place to voice these opinions and concerns. And I’m not really sure if it’s my place to be voicing them at all. This whole topic isn’t easy for me to discuss (it’s very personal) but I’ve never been very good…

Something of a Pseudonym: My thoughts on fanfiction and Fifty Shades of Grey: →

*nods*

somethingofapseudonym:

Fanfiction plays with existing characters as though they are toys. It’s a great way to take your enjoyment of someone’s work to a new, interactive level and to hone your skill with prose.

But writing is about more than prose. When you come up with an original work, you think a lot about your…

The picture blurs, then refocuses moderately sharper of the man consciously gazing down and avoiding the CCTV camera…Holy crap! I know who it is.
“Christian,” I whisper. “That’s Jack Hyde.

Fifty Shades Freed, Chapter 6.

give me a fucking break. i’m supposed to believe that a disgruntled editor at an indie publishing house is capable of installing a bomb in a helicopter, infiltrating a heavily guarded server room and starting a fire without getting caught?

oh, i forgot i was reading the worst book in the history of books.

What…Just Happened: An Afternoon With The Hunger Games

I LOL’d the whole way through. And I haven’t even read the books.

gyzym:

March 10, 2012, 10:35 AM: In the wake of traditional Saturday morning family breakfast, I find myself in a bookstore with my twelve year old brother. Unsurprising: the copy of Dave Egger’s How We Are Hungry clutched in my fist like spoils of war. Surprising: the table full of Hunger Games paraphernalia and paperbacks that said brother is lingering over.

“Haveyou read this?” he asks me. “My friend is reading it. You should read it and tell me if I’ll like it!”

Having discovered an unanticipated new meaning for the phrase, “Everyone and their brother has told me to read this book,” I purchase it. Sibling status: awesome. Fate status: sealed.

Me, 11:15 AM: Oh, I’ll just read a couple pages.

Me, 11:35 AM: Oh, I’ll just read a couple more pages.

Me, 11:57 AM: Goddamn it I, I have shit to do today. I’ll go buy coffee. I will put this book down. My resolve is strong.

Me, 12:15 PM: My resolve is so not strong. My resolve is the opposite of strong. What is resolve? Do they have it in Panem?

Me, 12:16 PM to 3:00 PM: NOTHING ON EARTH MATTERS EXCEPTING FINISHING THIS FUCKING BOOK

So join me, tumblr, on an ~exciting recap~ of my journey through this life-killer of a novel. You will laugh! You will…no, you’ll probably just laugh. At me. I don’t care; I must get it out of my brain before I like, break from sanity and buy the next two on my computer and end up bleeding out my eyes trying to finish them as rapidly as possible. I just. Hunger Games, what even are you.

Please note before we begin that this is a) very very very much meant to be tongue-in-cheek and b) I hate Peeta so much. So. Much. If you like Peeta, I do not hate you! I just hate Peeta. Be warned. With that said:

Cassandra Clare and the History of Fandom Exploitation
The exploits of E.L. James and success of Fifty Shades of Grey are not a singular event in the history of fan fiction. There is a long legacy of fan fiction authors exploitation the fans of original creations.
One of the most infamous cases is that of Cassandra Claire also knows as Best Selling Author Cassandra Clare. Not only did this one time “Big Name Author” of the Harry Potter fandom accept gifts from her readers, she also created a cafe press account to sell merchandise associated with her Lord of the Rings fan fiction (which was closed down by the Tolkien estate) and she solicited her readers for money to purchase a new laptop in order to continue writing her fan fiction.
These actions as well as the discovery that she plagiarized published author Pamela Dean by using large portions of book The Secret Country in her Draco Sinister fan fic, made her a pariah among many members of the fandom, but many of her readers continued support her to this day.
Many of the readers of her Mortal Instruments series know nothing of her fandom reputation and even those readers that do choose to support her career despite her deplorable behavior. Cassandra Clare’s tremendous commercial success despite her unethical behavior in fandom proves that it can be lucrative to exploit fellow fans for monetary gain and that doing so does not have a negative effect upon your professional career.
